Brief Description:
This is a short biography of one of the most brilliant and greatest scientists of all time – Albert Einstein. The title “A Truly Beautiful Mind” refers to Albert Einstein whose ideas and works revolutionised our perception of the universe. The title likewise has a significance beyond his academic pursuits.
Summary:
Born on 14th March 1879, in Ulm, Germany, Einstein had always been considered odd. Be it his appearance, his late development of the ability to speak at two and a half years of age or his habit of keeping to himself. He had always been considered to be boring by his playmates and a “freak” by his mother. No one at that time believed that he would ever prove to be any good. However, Einstein, throughout his life, proved all those people wrong.
When he was 15, he shifted with his family to Munich and went to school there. The strict discipline at school made him leave school. After completing schooling, he joined the University of Munich and showed a particular aptitude for Maths and Physics. He, later on, went on to marry Mileva Maric, a fellow student at the University. In 1905, he proposed the “Special Theory of Relativity” which determined that the measurement of time and displacement was not absolute. He also put forward the well-known equation E = mc2, which explained the relationship between mass and energy. Meanwhile, as he gained academic success, he encountered problems in his marital life.
In 1915, he published the “General Theory of Relativity” with the help of which he predicted the occurrence of a solar eclipse that was to occur in 1919. He instantly became famous, but his marriage with Mileva Maric ended in 1919. He married his cousin in the same year. He further went on to receive the Nobel Prize for his works in 1921.
With the rise of Nazism in Germany in 1933, he came to the USA for good. When the scientists of the USA came to know of the Nuclear Fission bomb being developed by the German scientists during the Second World War, he was the first person to write to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, impressing upon him the dangers of Atomic Bombs. He was deeply saddened when the USA used Atomic Bombs against Japan and wrote an official letter to the United Nations Organisation against this incident. But it was in vain. He then dedicated his life to World Peace, advocating against the collection of arms and development of weapons. Einstein died in 1976, robbing the world of a great scientific visionary and advocate of world peace.
