To know more about NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science Chapter 10, let’s look at the sub-parts of this chapter:
10.1 Story of Transport
10.2 How wide is this desk?
10.3 Some Measurements
10.4 Standard Units of Measurement
10.5 Correct of Measurement Length
10.6 Measuring the Length of a Curved Line
10.7 Moving Things around Us
10.8 Types of Motion
Section 10.1 – This section explains you exactly how means of transport that we see today came into existence. It tells you how people had no means to travel in ancient times so all they could do was walk to reach from one place to another. Slowly and gradually, people started to invent new ways through which they could travel, for example, simple logs of wood with a hollow cavity were made in place of the boats that we see today. Then further, it explains how the invention of wheels made it easier for people because then automobiles could be designed and used for commuting. The invention of the steam engine led to the development of new means of transport- railroads, which were made for steam engine-driven carriages and wagons. In a sequence order, this chapter explains how different means of transport came into being.
Section 10.2 – This section tells you to measure the length and width of some objects. Taking the example of a desk, measuring its length and width using a gilli and danda, and also with string lengths are taught in this section.
Section 10.3 – This section explains what measurements are. Measurement means the comparison of an unknown quantity with some known quantity. It also introduces the term “unit”, describing it as the known fixed quantity. There are two activities which tell you to try measuring different lengths using different parts of the body such as hand span, arm and foot and then compare these measurements with those recorded by your friends.
Section 10.4 – In this section, you will learn about some basic standard units of measurements. The section tells how in ancient times, the length of a foot, the width of a finger, and the distance of a step were commonly used as different units of measurements. However, this would have been very confusing since everyone’s body parts could be of slightly different sizes. This called for the creation of a standard unit of measurement and hence in 1790, the French created the metric system. You will learn about the International System of Units (SI units) in this section, for instance, metre, centimetre, kilometre and metre.
Section 10.5 – This section tells about the correct way to measure the length of an object using a metre scale.
Section 10.6 – This section teaches you to measure the length of a curved line using a thread.
Section 10.7 – In this section, you will learn about the objects and things around you that are moving. In a table, you are asked to observe and write down the things you see moving around you, for example, an ant, a fly, the hands of a clock etc.
Section 10.8 – This section introduces different types of motions with multiple examples. It mentions about circular motion, rectilinear motion, rotational motion, and periodic motion with diagrams and examples of each one of these.
