The chapter deals with light-emitting and non-emitting objects, their properties, nature and applications. It also explains what luminous objects are, the working of a pinhole camera, mirrors and reflections. It is a basic chapter that helps to build the foundation of students so that they can easily understand complexities associated with light, shadows and reflection in higher standards.

Section 11.1 – This section explains to you what are transparent, translucent and opaque objects and how they are identified. It also tells where they are found and what their applications are. If you cannot see through an object at all, it is an opaque object. If you are able to see clearly through an object, it is allowing light to pass through it and is transparent. There are some objects through which you can see, but not very clearly. Such objects are known as translucent. The section has a table where you are asked to observe and put different objects into these three categories.
Section 11.2 – This section tells you everything you need to know about shadows, right from its definition to the different animal shadows that are hidden in your hand. In this part, you will get to know how shadows are formed and that it can be obtained only on a screen. Diagrams in this section make the idea clearer.
Section 11.3 – This section informs you about each step involved in making a pinhole camera and how it functions. Using stationary easily available to you, you can make a pinhole camera of your own and have fun watching images of different objects.
Section 11.4 – In this section, you will learn about reflection and how mirrors are used to watch your own image, which is a reflection. Through an activity, you will learn how a mirror reflects a beam of light. Another activity in this section gives an idea of the manner in which light travels and gets reflected from a mirror.
