Do you know how much garbage we generate in our day to day lives? In 2018, India generated 62 million tonnes of waste per day. Garbage has polluted and affected almost every ecosystem. One way to deal with garbage is to dump it on the ground but it’s not an effective solution. Land fillings can lead to soil pollution, it can pollute the water bed residing deep down the earth. Because of the presence of chemicals in waste, it can lead to the degradation of soil quality. Garbage which is biodegradable does not cause any harm to the soil instead it improves the soil quality. Plastics don’t get degraded in the soil and if you are thinking that we can reuse it then not every plastic can be recycled. Plastics which are recyclable can be only recycled up to certain cycles.
In this chapter, you will learn about vermicomposting- a method to create manure from waste, recycling of paper, plastics and recycling.

Ex 16.5 Plastics – Boon or a Curse?
Section 16.1 – This section starts with telling where the garbage goes after it is picked by garbage pickers, or Safai karamcharis. They take garbage to a low lying open area, called a landfill. By studying this section, you will get to know that garbage has both useful and non-useful components. The non-useful component is separated out, spread over the landfill and then covered with a layer of soil. To deal with some of the useful components of garbage, compost making areas are developed near the landfill. The section ends with describing compost and also how it is formed.
Section 16.2 – In this section, you get to know about vermicomposting, which is the method of preparing compost with the help of red worms. An activity tells you how to make manure by the method of vermicomposting.
Section 16.3 – This section makes you think on the amount of waste we throw as garbage on a daily basis, and what all out of that can be recycled and reused. It also tells how these methods can help the environment and reduce garbage and wastage hugely and considerably.
Section 16.4 – In this section, you will learn the exact way to recycle paper and turn waste paper into new by creating beautiful patterns on it. This paper can be used for creative purposes like makings greeting cards, and other items of art and craft too.
Section 16.5 – This section is all about how using plastic has become so important for us but at the same time, its excessive usage has also proved hazardous to nature and the environment. Plastics create several problems, for instance, plastic bags thrown away carelessly on roads and other places get into drains and the sewer system, stray animals dying due to swallowing plastic thrown as garbage, and so on and so forth. Keeping these in mind, ten useful tips and points to minimise overuse of plastics and deal with garbage are given at the end of this section.
