In this chapter, you will learn about the electrical devices, electric circuits as well as conductors and insulators. The chapter introduces the concept of electricity and other electrical devices. You will know about the working of an electric cell, connecting an electric bulb to an electric cell and how to form an electric circuit. Also, the NCERT Class 6 Science Chapter 12 will teach students about the structure, function and electric switch in the form of diagrams. The illustrations provided in the chapter will bring students face-to-face with daily life experiences.
To know more about NCERT Solutions for Class 6th Science Chapter 12, let’s look at the sub-parts of this chapter:
12.1 Electric Cell
12.2 A Bulb Connected to an Electric Cell
12.3 An Electric Circuit
12.4 Electric Switch
12.5 Electric Conductors and Insulators
Section 12.1 – This section explains to you what provides electricity to bulbs, watches, clocks, radios, cameras and many other devices. It is an electric cell. An electric cell produces electricity from the chemicals stored inside it. When the chemicals in the electric cell are used up, the electric cell stops and has to be replaced. It has two terminals- the metal cap is the positive terminal, and the metal disc is the negative terminal. A diagram of a cell is also shown in this section.
Section 12.2 – This section has an activity which helps you to try to make an electric bulb light up using an electric cell and explains in detail how to make it. The several diagrams show the different arrangements of electric cell and bulb.
Section 12.3 – This section informs you about what an electric circuit is. The electric circuit provides a complete path for electricity to pass between the two terminals of the electric cell. The section ends with an activity to make a torch.
Section 12.4 – In this section, you will learn about an electric switch that is used in an electric circuit. A simple activity is given to make a switch using two drawing pins, a safety pin (or a paper clip), two wires and a small sheet of thermocol or a wooden board. You will learn to make a small functional electric circuit by the end of this section, and also learn that a switch is a simple device that either breaks the circuit or completes it.
Section 12.5 – in this section, you will study about conductors and insulators and learn to differentiate between the two. Materials which allow an electric current to pass through them are conductors of electricity, whereas those which do not allow an electric current to pass through them are called insulators.
At the end of this section, you will learn that switches, electrical plugs and sockets are made of conductors. On the other hand, rubber and plastics are used for covering electrical wires, plug tops, switches and other parts of electrical appliances, which people might touch. The section also tells us that our body is a conductor of electricity and it is thus very important to be careful while handling electrical appliances.
