Symmetry is quite a common term used in day to day life. When we see certain figures with evenly balanced proportions, we say, “They are symmetrical”.
In NCERT Maths Book Class 6, Chapter 13 Solutions, as you progress through the chapter you will learn symmetry. At first, you will learn how to make symmetrical figures using the example of ink-blot devils. Then you will study the figures with two lines and multiple lines of symmetry. As you move further in this chapter you will study the concept of reflection and symmetry through a series of examples.
13.1 Introduction
13.2 Making Symmetric Figures: Ink-blot Devils
13.3 Figures With Two Lines Of Symmetry
13.4 Figures With Multiple (More Than Two) Lines Of Symmetry
13.5 Reflection And Symmetry
Section 13.2 – In this section, you will study the making of symmetrical figures through ink-blot devils. A figure has line symmetry if a line can be drawn dividing the figure into two identical parts. The line is called a line of symmetry. A figure may have no line of symmetry, only one line of symmetry, two lines of symmetry or multiple lines of symmetry. Let us understand through an example – Take a piece of paper. Fold it in half. Spill a few drops of ink on the one-half side. Now press the halves together. You will observe that the resulting figure is symmetric. There is a line of symmetry in the middle.
Section 13.3 – This section deals with the figures having two lines of symmetry. We can imagine two lines of symmetry by taking the example of a rectangle. A rectangle can have a line of symmetry through its length and also through its breadth. Let us take another example, take a rectangular piece of paper. Fold it once and then once more. Draw some design as shown. Cut the shape drawn and unfold the shape. You will observe two lines of symmetry.
Section 13.4 – Now you will study the figures with multiple (more than two) lines of symmetry. Let us take an example, take a square piece of paper. Fold it into half vertically, fold it again into half horizontally. (i.e. you have folded it twice). Now open out the folds and again fold the square into half (for a third time now), but this time along a diagonal. Again open it and fold it into half (for the fourth time), but this time along the other diagonal. Open out the fold. Now you will see 4 lines of symmetry, one horizontally, one vertically and two diagonal lines of symmetry.
Section 13.5 – Towards the end of this chapter this section will brief you about reflection and symmetry. The line symmetry is closely related to mirror reflection. When dealing with mirror reflection, we have to take into account the left-right changes in orientation. Symmetry has plenty of applications in everyday life as in art, architecture, textile technology, design creations, geometrical reasoning, Kolams, Rangoli etc.
In this chapter, you are provided with several examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of symmetry.
