Nature of Popular Movements – In this section, you will study about various movements that took place in India such as the Chipko Movement (protest by villagers of Uttrakhand for forest conservation), party-based movements (nationalist movements, Kisan sabha, trade union movements, Naxalite movements) and non-party movements (movements by students and young activists having no intention to join the political party).

Dalit Panthers – In this section, you’ll learn about the Dalit community experiencing extreme caste injustice, Dr. Ambedkar becoming the iconic hero for Dalit liberation writings, origin of Dalit panthers (a military organisation), problems faced by Dalits in the society, inefficiency of legal mechanism to provide justice to Dalit community, mass action by Dalit panthers, activities of Dalit panthers to abolish caste system and more.

Bharatiya Kisan Union – In this section, you’ll study about Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) –  a leading organisation for farmers’ movement in the 80s, protest by farmers against the increase electricity rate in Meerut showing rural power. You’ll also learn how lakhs of farmers came together protesting under this movement through rallies, demonstrations, making BKU one of the most successful social movements in the eighties.

Anti-Arrack Movement – In this section, you’ll study about the anti-arrack movement in Andhra Pradesh led by women protesting for the ban of alcohol in their neighbourhood. You’ll learn the nature of this movement, women fighting the battle against alcohol, adult literacy drive on a large scale, alcohol leading to domestic violence. Finally, you’ll study the mass popularity of this movement throughout the state which started from the district of Nellore.

Narmada Bachao Andolan – In this section, you’ll study about the famous Narmada Bachao Andolan protesting against the construction of multi-purpose dams to save the Narmada River flowing in Central India. You’ll also learn about the justifications given by the government to build these dams and the reasons for protests by the locals and villagers.

Lessons from Popular Movements – In this section, you’ll study the lessons learnt from these popular movements such as how our democracy works, how such movements originate, why these movements take place, unity of rural population, effects of these strikes, agitations and protests on our society and finally the implementation of necessary laws and policies to safeguard the rights of every citizen of the country.
