Oscillation refers to the repetitive to and fro motion of an object along a fixed axis at a regular interval of time. The chapter has its usages in all spheres of life. The entire music world is based on the phenomenon of Oscillation- including the musical scales, making musical instruments and gadgets. Chapter Oscillations, NCERT Class 11 Physics Part- II Chapter 14 consists of 10 sub-sections.
Let us take a look at the subtopics of Class 11 Physics, Chapter 14, Oscillations
14.1. Introduction
14.2. Periodic and Oscillatory Motion
14.2.1. Period and Frequency
14.2.2. Displacement
14.3. Simple Harmonic Motion
14.4. Simple Harmonic Motion and Uniform Circular Motion
14.5. Velocity and Acceleration in Simple Harmonic Motion
14.6. Force Law for Simple Harmonic Motion
14.7. The Energy in Simple Harmonic Motion
14.8. Some systems are executing Simple Harmonic Motion.
14.8.1. Oscillation due to a spring
14.8.2. The Simple Pendulum.
14.9. Damped Simple Harmonic Motion
14.10. Forced Oscillations and Resonance.
In class 11 Physics, Chapter 14, you will learn:
Section 14.1: In this section, you will learn to know the importance of the phenomenon of oscillation and its application in various devices. It finds its uses ranging from AC, Power and electricity study to molecular packings and vibrations in solids.
Section 14.2: In this section, you will learn that when the motion of an object is repeated after regular intervals of time, the object is said to be undergoing periodic or oscillatory motion. This section of the chapter also defines the terminologies generally associated with oscillation such as period, frequency, displacement, etc, which have been elaborately explained in different subtopics.
Section 14.3: In this section, you will learn a general example of an object executing Simple Harmonic Motion is a Pendulum, or a ball suspended by a string and fixed rigidly on a wall. An object executing SHM follows a specific set of laws, equations, and formulae. For more details, you may refer to NCERT Physics Class 11 Oscillations Pdf here at UrbanPro.
Section 14.4: In this section, you will learn that the uniform movement of an object along a circular path of motion is known as the Uniform Circular Motion. We should also keep in mind that SHM is quite different from Uniform Circular Motion and centripetal motion.
Section 14.5: In this section, you will learn about the equations and formulae necessary to calculate Velocity and acceleration in Simple Harmonic Motion.
Section 14.6: In this section, you will learn how to obtain the angular acceleration using Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion. With F=ma, we can get the formula for Force in a Simple Harmonic Motion. Follow the chapter for a better explanation.
Section 14.7: In this section, you will learn that at the extreme positions of displacement, the energy in SHM is 0. The energy in a Simple Harmonic Motion is purely Kinetic Energy and can be calculated. Refer to Class 11 Physics Oscillations NCERT Solutions for better understanding.
Section 14.8: In this section, you will learn about some systems executing SHM. The subtopics include Spring and a Pendulum.
Section 14.9: In this section, you will learn that a pure Simple Harmonic Motion is hard to find in nature. This happens as air causes friction and lag- resulting in the pendulum to stop swinging eventually. It is caused due to the damping force, which acts as a reaction force.
Section 14.10: In this section, you will learn that the dampening eventually causes all oscillations to die out eventually- unless there is an external force acting on the body, such vibrations are referred to as Forced or Driven Vibrations. The last topic of the chapter discusses the Forced Vibrations in detail.
