In this chapter, you’ll study about trigonometric functions. The word ‘trigonometry’ is derived from the Greek words ‘trigon’ and ‘metron’ which mean ‘measuring the sides of the triangle’. Trigonometry is simply the calculation with triangles involving lengths, heights and angles of different triangles. In previous classes, you have studied what is trigonometry, trigonometric ratios of acute angles, trigonometric identities and application of trigonometric ratios in solving the problems related to heights and distances. In this chapter, you will learn about trigonometric functions and trigonometric equations in detail.
The subject of trigonometry has many real-life applications in the field of flight engineering, construction, gaming, navigation, architecture, seismology, and much more.
3.1 Introduction
3.2 Angles
3.3 Trigonometric Functions
3.4 Trigonometric Functions of Sum and Difference of Two Angles
3.5 Trigonometric Equations
Section 3.2 – In this section, you’ll learn what an angle is, initial side of an angle, terminal side of an angle, when the angle is negative and what the measure of an angle is. You’ll also study two other units of measurement of an angle such as degree measure and radian measure. You’ll also learn about the relation between radian and real numbers, the relation between degree and radian and what notational convention is.
Section 3.3 – In this section, you’ll study trigonometric ratios with respect to any angle in terms of radian measure and study them as trigonometric functions. You’ll also learn trigonometric functions such as sin, cosine, tan, as well as domain and range of trigonometric functions.
Section 3.4 – In this section, you’ll study various expressions of trigonometric functions as the sum and difference of two numbers (angles) and related expressions. The result obtained from these expressions is called trigonometric identities.
Section 3.5 – In this section, you’ll study trigonometric equations and learn to solve them. You’ll also learn principal and general solutions, in trigonometric equations.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams, examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Trigonometric Functions.
