In earlier classes, you were introduced to probability, which was based on the observations and the data collected. This method is called the statistical approach to probability. However, there is another approach to probability, known as the axiomatic approach of probability. In NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Maths, Chapter 16, you’ll study the axiomatic approach to probability. It is an approach in which some axioms are defined beforehand in order to digitise the events so that calculations can be done easily. You’ll also come across new terms like sample space, random experiment, events, occurrence, outcomes in this approach.
It is important for you to get a clear understanding of probability, as it has several real-life applications such as weather forecasting, playing a board game, voting, flipping a coin or a dice, analysing the most optimum insurance plan, chances in a lottery ticket and more.
16.1 Introduction
16.2 Random Experiments
16.3 Event
16.4 Axiomatic Approach to Probability
Section 16.2 – In this section, you’ll get exposure to random experiments and how important they are in our day to day lives. For instance, tossing a coin or rolling a dice. You’ll also learn related terms like outcomes, sample space of the experiment and sample point.
Section 16.3 – In this section, you’ll study what an ‘event’ is and the importance of events in probability. You’ll also acquire knowledge about the occurrence of an event, types of events such as Impossible and Sure Events, Simple Event and Compound Event. You’ll also learn the Algebra of events (complimentary event, The Event ‘A or B’, The Event ‘A and B’, The Event ‘A but not B’,), mutually exclusive events and exhaustive events.
Section 16.4 – In this section, you’ll learn about the probability of an event, probabilities of equally likely outcomes, probability of the event ‘A or B’ and probability of event ‘not A’.
In this chapter, you are provided with several examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Probability.
