In this chapter, you’ll learn about thermodynamics in detail. The word ‘Thermodynamics’ is derived from the Greek word ‘thermos’ which means heat, and ‘dynamics’ which means power. Thus, thermodynamics is nothing but a branch of physical science dealing with temperature, heat, with respect to work, energy, radiation. It is a relationship between various forms of energy. In this chapter, you’ll learn about the system and surroundings of thermodynamics; you’ll be able to differentiate between open, closed and isolated systems, learn the laws of thermodynamics, calculate changes in the energy due to work and heat, study what is enthalpy and enthalpies for different kinds of reactions. You’ll also examine what spontaneity is all about and Gibbs Energy.
Thus, an in-depth study of Class 11 Chemistry NCERT Solutions Chapter 6 will give you a good understanding of thermodynamics and related terms.
Let’s take a look at topics and sub-topics of Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 5 – Thermodynamics
6.1 Thermodynamic Terms
6.1.1 The System and the Surroundings
6.1.2 Types of the System
6.1.3 The State of the System
6.1.4 The Internal Energy as a State
6.2 Applications
6.2.1 Work
6.2.2 Enthalpy, H
6.3 Measurement of ∆U and ∆H: Calorimetry
6.4 Enthalpy Change, ∆r H of a Reaction – Reaction Enthalpy
6.5 Enthalpies for Different Types of Reactions
6.6 Spontaneity
6.7 Gibbs Energy Change and Equilibrium
Section 6.1 – In this section, you’ll learn what thermodynamics is all about and some related terms such as our system and the surroundings, types of systems such as open system, closed system, isolated system and the state of the system for thermodynamics.
Section 6.2 – In this section, you will study that several chemical reactions lead to the generation of gases competent of doing mechanical work or the generation of heat. You’ll be able to quantify these changes and relate them to the changes in internal energy such as work and enthalpy H.
Section 6.3 – This section deals with calorimetry and calorimeter. You’ll also study the measurements of ∆U and ∆H under two conditions such as at constant volume, qV and at constant pressure, qp.
Section 6.4 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about Reaction Enthalpy. You’ll get an in-depth knowledge of enthalpy changes during phase transformation, standard enthalpy of formation, thermochemical equations and Hess’s law of constant heat summation.
Section 6.5 – In this section, you’ll learn about enthalpies for various kinds of reactions such as Standard Enthalpy of Combustion (symbol: ∆c)0H, Enthalpy of Atomization)0(symbol: ∆aH,)0, Bond Enthalpy (symbol: ∆bondH, Lattice Enthalpy,) 0, Enthalpy of Solution (symbol : ∆solH,) and Enthalpy of Dilution.
Section 6.6 – In this section, you’ll study what spontaneity is all about and learn new topics like criteria for spontaneity, entropy and spontaneity, Gibbs energy and spontaneity, entropy and second law of thermodynamics, absolute entropy and third law of thermodynamics.
Section 6.7 – This section deals with Gibbs Energy Change and Equilibrium and examine the free energy changes in reversible reactions. You’ll also come across the effect of temperature on the spontaneity of reactions.
In this chapter, you are provided with several examples with their solutions for a clear understanding of Thermodynamics. 6 Healthy Habits of School Children
While schools provide formal education to the children, the home is where they start learning about things informally. Parents think that schools will take the initiative to educate their children. Well, this is partially true, as parents also play an essential role in bringing up their child. For the development of particular...
