The Hundred Dresses is a story that is divided into two parts in the ‘First Flight’ literature book of class 10. NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Literature Chapter 5 is The Hundred Dresses – I, where the story revolves around a Polish immigrant who has come to the United States of America. Her name is Wanda Petronski. She had two best friends Maddie and Peggy. Wanda is poor and wears a single dress to school, which was a faded blue dress. She was made fun of and claimed to have a hundred dresses “all lined up”.
Petronski was also bullied in school for she had said that she possessed a hundred dresses, and no one believed this fact because she was poor. They even made fun of her name as she was not originally from America and her name was different from the rest.
Among the people who teased her, her friends were the ones who teased her the most. Maddie was poor too so she felt terrible when Peggy teased her, as she was worried that she might be the next victim but did not find the courage to tell Peggy.
NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English Literature Chapter 5 teaches us not to be judgemental and instead be understanding and kind to one another.

The story begins with Wanda Petronski being absent for the day, and none of her friends noticed her absence, not even her best friends Peggy and Maddie or Madeline. The story then unfolds, and we get to see the why Wanda claimed she had a hundred dresses but wore only one dress. Peggy, Wanda’s best friend, was comparatively famous but she teases Wanda a lot. Most of her tease arose from the fact that she was curious to know how Wanda could afford a hundred dresses. By the end, when she to see the drawing of a hundred dresses lined up on the day of the drawing competition. She realised the entire theory of a hundred dresses, and so did the others, and they felt guilty.
Chapter 5 Class 10 First Flight book has a ‘before you read’ section, which helps the reader get a grip on the chapter as in what he or she should be expecting from the chapter. It briefs the story is about a poor girl who is bullied by her classmates and judged by them.
