Summary 

The story “Mijbil the Otter” by Gavin Maxwell revolves around the author going on a trip to Basra with his friend. When his friend left, he gifted him an otter named Mijbil. The author wanted a pet, as he often felt alone due to the loss of his pet dog.

The story is about the journey of the author from Basra to London, with the Otter named Mijbil being taken on a flight. The Otter, in the beginning, was covered in mud and couldn’t adapt well to its surrounding. The protagonist put Mijbil in a box to help him get accustomed to its surrounding and even put a meal in there for him. Upon coming back, the author had realised that the box was still and holes were dripping with blood. It scared the protagonists as he was quite far away from the airport. He somehow managed to clean it all up. Upon reaching the airport, Gavin was able to explain his condition to the air hostess, who advised him to keep the box shut. When Gavin opened the box, Mij leapt and ran away scaring many passengers on its way, and finally getting caught by the kind air hostess. The story ultimately ends with Gavin being able to successfully move Mijbil to London where people who are unfamiliar with the kind of animal Mijbil is, make wild guesses about him.

Gavin Maxwell: He is the main protagonist and the author of this story, who has written many famous books such as “Ring of Bright Water.” he was able to bring an otter from his trip to Iraq, and raise it in Scotland. He has even taken the Otter to the society of Zoology, where it was proven that it was subspecies of a smooth-coated otter. He used to be a pretty lonely person, who is in desperate need for a pet, and his life had changed for the better upon meeting MIjbil. Gavin, when he reached London, used to keep Mijbil on a leash and be questioned by his neighbours regarding the kind of species Mijbil was.

Mijbil the Otter: Though the Otter was a species that was known to be yet undiscovered by science. He looked like a small middle-aged dragon. The Otter was chocolate brown and christened under the name Lutrogale Persipicillata Maxwell by zoologists. The Otter enjoyed juggling with small objects. He also enjoyed playing with ping pong balls and marbles and had a habit of spreading every drop of water.
