Sitar

"I come from a non-musical family, and my first encounter with the sitar happened about seven years ago when I saw my aunt, a family friend, playing this beautiful instrument. Intrigued, I asked her about it, and she introduced me to Sitar Strings, where she was learning (and continues to do so). From that moment, I was welcomed at Sitar Strings with open arms, love, and encouragement, marking the beginning of my musical journey. Over the past seven years, Indian classical music has evolved from a hobby to a true passion. I am constantly eager to learn more, and Sitar Strings has been my guiding light, not just in music but in life. I’m deeply grateful to my mentor and to my aunt, who not only introduced me to the sitar but also to this wonderful learning environment. Her unwavering support and assistance with my practice have been invaluable, and I truly appreciate her for that. From day one, my experience at Sitar Strings has been incredible, filled with opportunities for growth. Beyond learning to play the sitar, I’ve gained a profound understanding of Indian classical music. The positive, supportive environment has encouraged me to embrace learning without fear of mistakes, building my confidence and helping me progress. It’s not just me—my family has embraced the music too. My younger sister, who would watch me practice at home, became curious and began her own lessons at Sitar Strings a few years ago. Even my parents have developed a genuine appreciation for the sitar and Indian classical music. I wholeheartedly recommend Sitar Strings to anyone eager to learn the sitar. The authenticity, values, and personalized guidance offered here are rare to find elsewhere. If you’re looking to begin or continue your musical journey, don’t hesitate—Sitar Strings is the place for you. I look forward to my lifelong learning with Sitar Strings. "

"I’ve always been captivated by Indian classical music, and the sitar, in particular, has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. When I decided to start learning, Sitar Strings was the first name that came up in my search, and I’m so glad I found them. The faculty at Sitar Strings is exceptional—highly qualified, deeply knowledgeable, and rooted in tradition, yet patient and approachable. What was especially impactful to me is how they treat learners as fellow musicians, not just students. The philosophy followed at Sitar Strings is exceptional—a perfect balance of authentic traditional music and modern teaching practices. This combination creates an ideal environment for learning a complex instrument like the sitar, making the process smoother and more enjoyable than I ever imagined. Watching my mentor play the sitar feels like a meditation in itself. I could listen for hours, lost in the serenity of each note, and I was assured that my learning was in very capable hands. Sitar Strings' teaching method is what sets them apart. Beyond just focusing on technical aspects, they emphasize not only the feel of the instrument but also the emotional depth of the music, helping students connect with the art form on a deeper level. The anecdotal style of teaching makes it easy to grasp and remember exercises while also understanding the true essence of sitar playing. I’m deeply grateful for this journey with Sitar Strings. It’s been an experience I’ll always cherish, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Sitar Strings to anyone—regardless of age or prior experience—looking for a serious, sincere, and authentic learning environment. "My musical voyage had begun with the Indian bamboo flute, and that made me listen to other instruments, and I found another magical and very soothing instrument, the sitar. It was challenging to find an appropriate mentor to learn the sitar. After three years of tenacious searching, I eventually made contact with Sitarstrings in Mumbai and began learning the sitar there. However, after completing my basic training for a few months, I had to move to Australia to fulfil my professional commitments. Fortunately, Sitarstrings' tech-savvy culture and methodology allowed me to complete my further training virtually. I'm over 40 years old, and after learning the instrument for about two years, I'm thrilled to be able to play a few ragas on the sitar. Sitar is now a family member. As a matter of fact, my daughter and other family members have grown to enjoy listening to Indian classical music. The bond I have with the Sitarstrings is truly a blessing. My learning path has been illuminated by their outstanding mentoring and patient assistance, which involved multiple examples to help me grasp the topic or idea. I vouch for Sitarstrings because of their extensive subject knowledge, intense enthusiasm for teaching, creative methods of instruction, and their intention and ability to preserve and spread the authentic traditional character of Indian classical music. "Under the guidance of faculty at Sitarstrings, I have been able to understand the basics of playing the Sitar and sharpen my skills overtime. Sir had demonstrated a deep passion for the instrument which is reflected in his teachings. His patience and knowledge of the instrument have helped me learn better. Not only does he impart technical expertise, but also guides one to grow and evolve as a person. For anyone looking to learn the basics or upgrade their skills in playing the Sitar, I would recommend them to learn under the guidance of Sitarstrings faculty. "

Hi Deepti, Are you concerned about present music education or music performances/recitals ? I shall answer both ways as per my knowledge and experience. Yes, at concerts time theory is still being followed. You may attend concerts and find that almost every artists presents Raga according to the time of performance. About music education, it is not being followed however students are informed about the time theory and specific time for each and every raga. Your point is valid that by following this theory we might loose some of the ragas i.e. late night or early morning or probably the afternoon ragas too. As most if the concerts happen in late evening and only few festivals are whole night or at any other time. But Artists do not perform only at concerts, they also release albums and certainly they have option to consider the odd time ragas in their albums.
