Reading and understanding ancient Tamil inscriptions can be a challenging task. The Tamil Brahmi script was prevalent in Tamil Nadu from the 3rd century BCE onwards and continued with variations up to the 4th century of Common Era. The Tamil script evolved from the Grantha script around the 7th century CE, and inscriptions in this script are found only in the northern portion of Tamil Nadu up to the beginning of the eleventh century CE.
To read ancient Tamil inscriptions, you need to have a basic understanding of the Tamil Brahmi script. The script has been paleographically and stratigraphically dated between the third century BCE and the first century CE. The Tamil-Brahmi script has been used to write inscriptions in the early form of Old Tamil. The script is an abugida, which means that each letter represents a consonant sound with an inherent vowel sound.
There are various methods used for extraction of text from epigraphic records found on rock edicts and hero stones. The general procedure follows two major steps: pre-processing of the inscription image, followed by segmentation and classification of the inscribed characters.

According to Kamil Zvelebil, there are eight major dialects of Tamil: Madras, Madurai, Dindugul, Erode, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Ramnad, and Trinconamalee (Ceylon). These dialects differ from each other in terms of lexical variations, but not in terms of phonological or grammatical differences.
It is important to note that the usage of the nominative and accusative cases may vary slightly across different regions where Tamil is spoken. Variations in dialects and accents can influence the way these cases are used. For example, in certain regions, the postposition “யை” (yai) is used instead of “ஐ” (ai) to mark the accusative case.
I hope this information helps!
