Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts. Taekwondo is evolving not only as a popular Official Olympic Sport & martial art, but also as a cultural industry and lifestyle sport popularized in 206 countries. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Taekwondo not only teaches the art of self-defense, but also helps achieve physical and mental perfection and acts as a way of life. This art which inculcates harmony between man and nature which is the basic goal of Indian philosophy. However, many, if not most, people practice Taekwondo primarily because it is the most complete of exercises. Taekwondo promotes the strength and coordination of the whole body, as well as providing maximum aerobic fitness and flexibility. As one article in the New York Times (5/4/96) stated, "In 1 hour and 15 minutes of Taekwondo class you will get the equivalent of 45 minutes of aerobics, 45 minutes of calisthenics and the stretch of 45 minutes of Yoga, plus the most effective means of self-defense.
