The user...
1- Should have good exposure with computers so that he/she can observe the 'Software to User' communication techniques.
1- Should have good understandings of Geometries.
2- Should have understandings of Co-ordinate systems so that you can understand how AutoCAD accepts the values it asks to make a geomerty.
2- Should have the knowledge of Engineering Drawing (Projectins for Different types of Views creations, Annotations & Symbolic Representations for Standards).
The tips are for Engineering beginners...

Ofcourse CATIA... in terms of Everything, But most people use AutoCAD as well for Initial Stages of Designing or Development becasue
- The Speed you get here in AutoCAD while working with it, you don't get in any other CAD Platform,It doesn't need a powerful Computer to run with.
- It's way cheap to buy than CATIA.
- You need hell lots of Modifications when you develop new Design (When we design something we design in 2D-Orthographic Views), for what AutoCAD is best tool.
- The Initial Designs work as Reference Design to any further processings like needs of modifications as per customer requirements, which will need CAD or CAE (Simulations), CAM (Automated Manufacturing) or Corporate needs like pursuading clients with help of Visualized 3D Models, Animations, and Documentations, that's where we need 3D Design CAD Softwares like SolidWorks or CATIA.
So the answer is, You gotta learn both, if this question was about decesion making before starting a CAD Course.

AutoCAD is 2D Drafting/3D Modeling CAD Platform and the Basics of any CAD Software Operation is dependent on some processes that we can execute with help of the commands (Tools Available in Ribbon/ Alias Assigned for Commands) which are categorised as under -
- Geometry Creation (2D or 3D)
- Geomtery Modification (Trimming/Extension, Corner Making etc)
- Geometry Manipulations (Translations, Roatations) & Transformations (Scaling or Stretching)
- Annotating the Drawing / Model (Dimensionings, Texting, Applying Leaders, Hatches etc.)
There are a lot more but everything we can do depends upon the purposes like sometimes we need to apply Colours & Materials on Drawings/ Solid Parts for visual separations of contents. Sometimes we need to apply lights and cameras for Rendering Purposes, But the most used processes are the points I mentioned above.
