How is writing analysed in the IELTS?

In the IELTS exam, the Writing section is analyzed based on four key criteria:

1. Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2):

   • Task Achievement (Task 1): This criterion assesses how well you fulfill the requirements of the task, which usually involves describing visual information (e.g., charts, graphs). You need to present a clear, accurate, and relevant summary of the information given.
   • Task Response (Task 2): This evaluates how well you address all parts of the essay question, presenting a clear position throughout your response. It includes developing your ideas with relevant examples and details.

2. Coherence and Cohesion:

   • Coherence: This aspect measures how logically your ideas are organized and how well they flow from one to another. Your writing should be easy to follow and logically structured.
   • Cohesion: This evaluates the use of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas and ensure the text is fluid. Cohesive devices like conjunctions, pronouns, and transitions should be used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs.

3. Lexical Resource:

   • This criterion assesses the range and accuracy of your vocabulary. You should demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary and use it appropriately to convey precise meanings. This includes the correct use of collocations, idiomatic expressions, and avoiding repetition.

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

   • This evaluates the range and accuracy of your grammatical structures. You need to use a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, and ensure they are grammatically correct. Proper use of punctuation is also considered.

Each of these criteria is weighted equally, and your overall score for the Writing section is an average of the scores you receive in these four areas. To achieve a high band score, it’s important to balance all these aspects in your writing tasks.
