Hi Mr Vikas,
Cracking CAT is not a challenging task; however, all your requisite basic concepts must be clear. If you are solely preparing for CAT by taking a break, then three months of preparation is more than enough, provided you're giving at least 6 hours to the practice. But if you are working contemporaneously, then six months of preparation sparing 2 to 3 hours for studying.
There are plenty of exams apart from CAT ( such as XAt, NMAT, SNAP, etc.) which can get you into elite colleges. Even though all these exams are highly competitive, you can easily score good percentile through 6 months of dedicated preparation. Look for online coaching to guide you better in regards to syllabus and preparation strategy.
Hope this clarifies your query.
