Why is classical music of Southern India called Carnatic music?

Carnatic music is so called because it is the music that's pleasant to hear.In Sanskrit Karna means Ear. That which is pleasing to the ear is called Karnataka sangeetam. What are the contents of Carnatic Music? Like Saraliswaras, Jantaswaras, Dhatuswaras, etc.

Carnatic music is classified as Abhyaasa gaana (Excersie or PracticeMusic) and Manodharma Sangita(Improvised or creative music). The first part has got all the learning of Sarali swaras, Janta, daatu, alankarams (describing the talas),geetams,swarajathis,varnams,keertanas and krits,tillanas,javalis,padams... ...more
