A covalent bond is a bond in which electrons are shared between the atoms participating in the bond formation, i.e., a pair of electrons is shared between two atoms.
In the case of carbon, there are four valence electrons in the outermost shell of carbon. It allows carbon to form multiple covalent bonds giving rise to its various allotropic forms. Hence covalent bond is essential.
