Some people can do the first thing for themselves using computer, books, and periodicals. They are comfortable finding their own way into a new content area. For many people courses provide focus based on the narrowing choices made by experts in the field to guide the student into understanding. The vast array of possible information available on a subject is narrowed to the reading material selected for the class and the information provided by the professor. The instructor should also know the field well enough to help the student determine the relative importance of various aspects. They should also guide students to understanding more than one side of critical issues within a discipline. I deeply appreciate professors who did this well at the undergraduate and graduate level. The ones who did it the best, prepared me the most to approach new areas on my own without needing the guidance of a course.
