What is GATE exam? Why is it needed?

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers. This is an annual exam conducted by IITs and IISc for admissions to their post graduate and direct Ph.D. courses. Also, GATE exam is used for screening suitable candidates for employment in various public sector companies like ONGC, BHEL, etc. A good score in GATE exam also serves as an academic benchmark for identifying good engineers.
