NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) is India’s one of the premier fashion institutes. Established in 1986 under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, it is an institution of Design, Management and Technology. The institute was granted statutory status in 2006 under the act of Parliament of India – empowering it to award degrees and other academic distinctions.
NIFT is ranked as the premier institute of fashion management and technology in India. And is the founder member of “Fashion Schools’ Foundation of the World”, which comprises of 34 fashion schools globally. The institute is currently headed by Mr. P.K. Gera, I.A.S.
NIFT’s head office is in New Delhi and have centres in the following cities in India, where it offers Graduate and Post-Graduate programmes in the areas of Design, Management and Technology:

As per a recent survey, NIFT Delhi, NIFT Bengaluru and NIFT Gandhinagar ranked as top 3 centres in terms of education and placement. In 2013, NIFT Gandhinagar was allotted an extra 30 seats in Fashion Design department under NRI quota in response to the center’s growing demand and quality. In addition, a new NIFT Campus at Ludhiana, Punjab has been announced and a new centre in Ompora Industrial area, Kashmir, is also expected to come up soon. Once the Ludhiana and Ompora campus are open, there will a total 17 NIFT’s centres across India.

NIFT Programmes
NIFT provides two levels of programmes – Graduate and Post-Graduate level. Recently it has also added PhD program. NIFT has an agreement with Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA, which gives selected students from NIFT to receive Dual Degree from the institutions.
Bachelor Programmes (4 Years)
Age Criteria
Maximum Age: 23 years. The upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 years for the candidates of Scheduled Castes (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/ Differently Abled Person (PHP).

Master Programme (M. Des.) – Design Space
Design Space is an advanced course that demands an understanding of fundamentals in design and presupposes that candidates would be familiar with the basic skills and theories for successful completion of the programme.
NIFT programme would not provide any basic knowledge and skill development in design as a part of Master programme.

Reservation of Seats
The seats reserved for SC / ST / Differently Abled Candidates (PHP) / Foreign Nationals / SAARC / NRI, in each programme are as under:
A total of 15% of total seats (5 seats) are reserved for Foreign Nationals whether residing in India or abroad, applicants from SAARC countries and Non Resident Indian (Non Resident Indian is a citizen of India who holds an Indian passport and has temporarily immigrated to another country for six months or more for work, residence or any other purpose).
The reserved seats are calculated on supernumerary basis and applicants applying under the Foreign Nationals category can avail the benefits in each discipline across campuses – Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Mumbai and Raebareli.
The admission to NIFT programmes for Foreign Nationals / SAARC / NRI candidates will be based on the following examinations:
Bachelor Progaramme (B.Des & B.FTech) | SAT-1 Score |
Master Programme (MFM, M.Des & M.FTech) | GMAT Score |
Allotment of Centre/Programme will be decided on the basis of merit list prepared as per the scores of candidates. Generally, the highest score of SAT-1 or GMAT scores is considered for allotment of seat at a Centre. However, there is a specific timeframe which is considered (the date is not yet released for the next NIFT exam).
