This is so because there are seven colours in the light. If we decide colours by their frequencies, we would not be able to get all the colours. As you see the VIBGYOR pattern, You will find indigo comes after violet. Indigo is decreasing the wavelength of violet. Similarly, for other colours, If we go by frequency only, we will not get intermediate colours like orange, indigo. Etc
