Why do we need to understand how Search Engine works ?
By understanding how the search engine exactly works, we can optimize our web pages to make sure they are visible when a user searches for the related content. We can therefore analyse the required keywords and use them where the search engine looks in the web pages. By learning this technique we can not only get a business online but also make a business readily visible or listed in one of the Search Engine’s top results.
History: -
Archie, the first Search Engine ever discovered in the history of mankind (1990). It was the first search program but the fault with it was, it could give up a search result but it couldn’t identify what’s inside the web pages i.e the content of the web pages. Due to this, the search engine was not able to categorize the web pages
Then came along the most advanced Search Engine’s like Google,Yahoo, Bing and ask. These search engines are a bunch of most efficient and sophisticated computer programs.
Now,if we look into how does a search engine reacts whenever the user searches something. Whenever there is a query, the search engine compares it with all the web pages available and provide the user with the best search results. The search engines usually publishes or refers:-
- Local business listings
- Items/Products for sale
- Images, videos and other content
Now, let’s look into how does Search Engine actually works?
The Search Engine adopt three Different techniques, includes:-
1.Crawling: -
The term crawling refers to examining the content. Search Engines crawl all the web pages available to search the related content web pages images and videos and provide the best search results.
Search Engine uses some unique set of program called robots which are usually referred as crawlers or spiders. These spiders crawl up to all web pages and keep on searching for the related content but never stops crawling from page to page.
2.Indexing:—
The term indexing refers to categorizing of every piece of content.A Huge number of search results are provided by the bots or crawlers, here indexing helps differentiate few important pages from all those results using the description available from those web pages. This kind of technique helps the search engine in finding the original content and also avoids duplicated web pages in the display.
3. Ranking:—
The results from the Index are arranged according to the Ranking of these web pages. This techniques helps the search engine denote which content is more useful to the user. The sole objective of ranking is to provide the user with whatever is looking for.
Ranking of the search results or the web pages are done according to: -
- Uniqueness of the content
- Quality of the content
- unique Words used
From the above, we are clear that when a user searches something on a search engine, the search engine looks into the index which is arranged according to the ranking. The index is therefore generated by filtering the results which are given by the crawling or spider bots.
Now getting into how search engine understand the web pages. When a user visit a random web page he can show the content of the webpage, the images available, the videos, etc where as when a search engine is it says to search engine can not only observe the content, images and videos of the page but also the code of the webpage i.e the html code(or other). So the user can edit the html code to optimize the webpage. Those who are not good with HTML can opt for tools that helps us to edit HTML code which is known as CMS(Content Management System). Many websites can be edited using CMS.
Few factors in the code that contributes to the visibility of the page in the search engine results:-
1. Page title:—
The title of a web page must be exactly representing the content of the entire page. Every website has few pages and each page must have a unique and specific title. This title column in the code help search engine understand and generate the search results.

2. Page text:— Every webpage has its own description and several words are used to describe a web page. To optimize search results, the webpage must have the alternative texts/words, which are used by the customers to describe our product/service. Analyse the words which are used by the customer to describe a specific product and replace these keywords with the existing boards in a web page this will help you drive more attention of the search engine to your web page.

3. Images:—
Search engines don’t actually recognize the images just as we do. So, day of the code behind the images in street. Here, we must help the search engine understand the image. We can do this by giving a descriptive name to the image, which describes what’s exactly in the image.

Using the Alt-tab:—
The Alt-Tag is used to read out the description. This tag is specifically used in a software which is used by the visually impaired this software read up the images for those who cannot see. It is also applicable in browser that doesn’t support displaying of images. This can also be edited using the CMS. The content management system provides the user with an option for the Alt tag.

Final conclusion in optimizing a web page: -
1. Using descriptive and unique titles for a page.
2. Using descriptive names for the images in a web page.
The search engine mostly opts for: -
- Content
- Coding
- Descriptive words
- Alternative texts
- Optimal visibility
