The purpose of digital marketing is to make brand awareness, drive traffic [users] and convert the traffic to a sale.

Finally, retain the users and make more sales.

The ultimate goal is to make the early users the brand ambassadors who act as your product evangelist and send more referral sales via word of mouth.

Note: Industry call the above purpose has a Marketing and Sales Funnel.

Before, we talk about the tools used by Digital Marketers.

Let’s understand the activities the Digital Marketers perform, the teams and functional areas where they work on to execute the above sales funnel.

The following are the responsibilities of Digital Marketers:

ii. Research: Finding and segmenting Target customers and where they hang out online. And how to reach target customers.

Once, the research is done getting the Brand name out in front of the customers is the real deal.

iii. Content Development: Valuable content related to user problems.

[Brand Awareness, product education and trust building that your product has the solution to customer problem is developed by providing useful and valuable content]

iv. Communicate: Communicate Brand messages, values, solutions, offers etc to users on social media and online [Google and other forums].

v. Design: Design the messages [ad copy and online marketing communications for social posts].

Establishing the relationship and nurturing and pursuing customer to make buying decisions happens with all social media messages.

vi. Personal Relationship: Digital Marketers make a personal and emotional relationship with users over Email.

This is were most of the sales conversions happens. [Brand impressions, remembering of Brand messages and engagement happens over social media [Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram etc.]

But, the trust and personal and emotional bond are built up via email.

vii. Promote: Promote on search engines, social media, and other places

To keep the customers in the loop and that impressions and Brand building established via heavy online promotions.

Collaboration, optimizing and measuring, Data and Analysis:

For Retaining customer, converting more users to buy Products, making loyal customers and ultimately getting more and more referral sales is part of a good [experienced Digital Marketer] Digital Marketing activist which is done collaboratively with other teams within the organization.

Note:

For a Big company, they have luxury of having bagful of capital to hire expert individuals for each functional area [Research, Data collection, Data Science, Analysis, Email Marketing, Content Marketing, SEO specialists, Strategists, Optimization Officers etc.]

But:

Majority of the companies have Digital Marketers who have to perform all tasks all alone maybe with the help of few executes.

All in All:

Most of the time all Digital Marketers have fair knowledge in all the above discussed functional areas and particularly Expert in one or two functional areas.
