Boron and other 13th group elements in the periodic table generally forms electron deficient compounds. Therefore to minimise their electron deficiency either they form adduct with some electron donor species generally lewis bases (such as NH3) or dimerise ( as in the case of B2H6 or Al2Cl6). In the case of boron halides typically with chlorides, bromides, iodides boron completes its electron defiency by forming adduct with NH3 also its hybridisation changes from sp2 to sp3 while it does so. taking BF3 as a special case, it involves back bonding (2p-2p) overlap so it is least probable to form adduct with lewis bases such as NH3.
