English Grammar – Apostrophe

We all learn English grammar in school and they we forget to follow the rules, today when Indian education system has reached to its ugliest end. Students do not want to study, parents are busy in their daily job or business. Teachers are marginally paid and not been trained to develop and cater their craft.

Result: A girl who knew nothing stood first in Bihar last year, this year 70% are failed and acquired 1 or 2 marks. The rest of the states also share this miserable reality. Only they did not flash in headlines.

The harsh reality is reflected in employment numbers, Indian fresh doctors, engineers and many other professionals failed to acquire job today and foreign companies do not want to recruit them as they lack in basic English speaking with written communication.

Today we will learn the use of Apostrophe, we use apostrophe to show the possession in English language. It is interesting to read the complete usage of this apostrophe.

Apostrophe is a valuable tool given to us by English. We use –‘s in singular and –s’ in plural form. Nouns ending with‘ s ‘ adds   ‘s  to form singular possessive. In plural possessive nouns with ending‘s’ we add ‘es’ to it.

Names ending with es pronounced iz.

Linguistically anarchy: While writing Jesus’ is correct by Hart’s rule p.31. Jesus’s is also used in revised English Bible 1989.

Be careful in following usages

  1. A fortnights’ holidays
  2. A two weeks’ holiday
  3. A rupee’s worth
  4. Two rupees’ worth

Your money’s worth. One should place it correctly. There is no need of apostrophe for go to or take to usages like

"I am going to Chitale stores", "He will take me to Candy shop".

When we use pronoun and establish the entity then we do not need to add the apostrophe.

In country like India, we always read and watch the names of hotels or shops, Quality Walls’s ice cream, or Talvalkar’s gym. It should be Quality Walls ice cream and Talvalkar gym.

Apostrophe is not used for plural non-possessive like, Possessive pronouns: its hers, ours, theirs, yours and whose.

Last and important tip: There are no words such as - her’s, our’s, their’s, your’s.
