Since independence, poverty is major challenge faced by India. During early independence period the poverty rate was very high in India. The economic growth during this period was also very low. There was about 45% poverty in the early 1950s which remained the’ same till the early eighties.

Poverty is of two types A) absolute Poverty .that is utter lack of food & total jobless ness .it was more than 70% in I five year Plan .came down to 45 to 50 % in 2 decades of Planning .. reasons are asvarifold ; poor monsoons, shift from agriculture to Industry, faulty planning, rising population , and ..of late Bad Governance like tamilnadu farmer suicides in 2018..B) relative Poverty - those who are becoming poor in relation to others in urban areas .etc,.
