In this lesson, I will be giving some tips to improve your vocabulary.
The article is the word's best friend.
In french, almost every word has a gender. To memorise which gender the object or word belongs to, it is advised to learn the word along with its article every single time.
For example, if you're learning the word livre (meaning book), don't learn it as 'livre', learn it as 'le livre'.
This way, you will always remember the gender of that particular word.
As Le is used before a masculine word
La, for feminine
And Les for plural.
I'll be explaining this in detail in my next lesson.
Learn from your surroundings
Whenever you are working on your vocabulary, take some time to look around you and try to remember what it is called in french. It will be easy to remember as the object is right in front of you.
For example, things in your dining room. If you go outside, name the things in nature, like trees and plants, the sky, shops etc. When you're folding your clothes, try to remember what a shirt, or a pant, or a top is called, also the colour.
Be a parrot
Pronunciation plays a vital role when we learn a new language. So learn to repeat every new word that you hear, pay attention to its pronunciation, repeat it, write it and say it out loud.
Try to make sentences.
When you learn a word, it is essential to know where to use that word. Begin with short and less complicated sentences.
For example, as we learnt the word 'le livre', you can try making a sentence as simple as, 'J'ai un livre.' (I have a book).
Also, you can watch youtube videos and get PDFs of french short stories to understand how and where a word is used.
Play games
There are several crossword puzzles and games that you may come across online, take part in it, just for fun, which would be a fun way to improve your vocabulary.
These are just some of how you can not only improve your vocabulary but also indulge yourself in the fantastic journey of learning that you've undertaken. It will be a constant motivation to learn new words each day.
All the best. :)
