Striving for better environment
Acid Rain:
- Acid rain is rainwater containing harmful amounts of nitric and sulphuric acids.
- When fossil fuels such as coal, wood, petroleum are burnt, nitrogen oxides and sulphuric oxides are released into the atmosphere.
- These products are soluble in water.
- During rains, these oxides react with large quantities of water vapour of atmosphere to form acids like sulphuric acid, nitric acid and nitrous acid.
- These acids mix with mist, rainwater drops or snow and change it's composition.
- The rain or snow that falls to the ground is called acid rain.
Oil spills:
- Accidental release of oil into a body of water as from a tanker, offshore drilling rig or underwater pipeline and wells, often present a hazard to marine life and the environment.
- These oil spills form a layer in the sea and prevent sunlight penetrating the water, which harms the marine life.
Sources of Noise Pollution:
- Road traffic noise.
- Air craft noise.
- Rail roads.
- Construction noise.
- Noise in industries.
- Celebration of festivals.
- Noise from consumer products.
E.g. Household appliances.
Sources of Radioactive Pollution:
- Nuclear power plants.
- Nuclear fuel.
- Nuclear weapons.
- Mining.
- Nuclear accidents.
- Medical waste.
