Avg speed= total distance / time
To consider the magnitude take mod on both side.
Which means mod of total displacement equals to total distance.
So in case of straight line motion |total displacement| = |distance|.

When the magnitude of displacement done by the object is the same, magnitude of total distance covered and in the same direction than the magnitude of average velocity is equal to the magnitude of average speed. As displacement is a vector quantity and it varies as the direction changes, but the distance covered will not depend on the direction as it will be equal to total path covered. Displacement could be negative , zero,and positive but the distance is always non-negative.
