The blanket of air that surrounds the earth is called the atmosphere. It extends to about 560 kilometres around the planet. The extent of the atmosphere is not uniform throughout. It is dense near the ground, gets thinner as we go higher and becomes negligible in the outer space.
The presence of an atmosphere is significant for us .it traps solar energy and helps in maintaining the right temperature for the survival of living organisms on earth. The ozone layer protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
