LiF is insoluble in water. On the contrary, LiCl is soluble not only in water, but also in acetone. This is mainly because of the greater ionic character of LiF as compared to LiCl. LiF is insoluble in water. On the contrary, LiCl is soluble not only in water, but also in acetone. This is mainly because of the greater ionic character of LiF as compared to LiCl. The solubility of a compound in water depends on the balance between lattice energy and hydration energy. Since fluoride ion is much smaller in size than chloride ion, the lattice energy of LiF is greater than that of LiCl. Also, there is not much difference between the hydration energies of fluoride ion and chloride ion. Thus, the net energy change during the dissolution of LiCl in water is more exothermic than that during the dissolution of LiF in water. Hence, low lattice energy and greater covalent character are the factors making LiCl soluble not only in water, but also in acetone.

In Lithium fluoride the lattice enthalpy is very high due to small size of fluoride ions. In this case the hydration enthalpy is very less. Hence, LiF is insoluble in water. Where as in lithium chloride the lattice enthalpy is very small due to large size of chloride ions and hence its hydration enthalpy...

Where as in lithium chloride the lattice enthalpy is very small due to large size of chloride ions and hence its hydration enthalpy is high. More over LiCl has partial covalent and partial ionic character due to the polarization of Chloride ion by Lithium ion. Due to its low hydration energy and partial covalent and partial ionic character LiCl is soluble in water as well as acetone.

LiF has higher lattice energy due to the small size of fluorine.hence its hydration energy is very less, so it is insoluble in water. But in the case of LiCl, lattice energy is less due to the larger size of chlorine; hence, its hydration power is very high. So it is soluble in water.
