Phythagoras theorem gives you the relation among the sides in a right angled triangle. Let us see how it works. Draw a right angle triangle on a piece of paper and mark the right angle in it. Identify the side of the triangle opposite to your marked right angle. You may observe it as the one of the longest sides of the triangle too. This is called hypotenuse of your right angled triangle. Identify the other two sides of the same triangle that are adjacent to each other (means side by side) and your marked right angle is the common angle to these to sides. So, pythagoras theorem gives you the relation among these three sides as Square of hypotenuse = square of adjacent side 1 + square of adjacent side 2.
