Firstly of all, Indian Classical Music is highly traditional. North Indian Classical Music tradition is called Hindustani while South Indian expression is referred to as Carnatic. This classification did not happen till the 16th century, and during Islamic rule ( Persian Invasion ) of the Indian subcontinent, the traditions were separated and evolved into distinct forms.
I am not around Coimbatore, so I don't have a tutor to refer, but I hope you get your answers here.
Finally, attend as many concerts as possible to gain knowledge in both genres of music. Several features are very common to both these forms of Indian classical music. Through proper guidance, you can appreciate Indian classical music.

Private tuition is the best way to learn any craft. Joining in any Academy will build your contacts and you can collaborate with people very often. Online class to me personally must be an extension of regular/ private classes
