Jhum cultivation or shifting cultivation is a method of cultivation highly prevalent in the North-Eastern states has attracted some attention in recent time. This is because Jhum cultivation is considered to be a wasteful technique compared to the traditional method of cultivation. Jhum cultivation is done in the hills area mostly by the tribal people.

So, they use primitive means of shifting cultivation due to which, by burning plantation, they get rid of weeds, pests and insects without any use of expensive pesticides and fertilizers.
However, this type of cultivation reduces soil fertility and induces soil erosion.
