LAYA : LAYA can be defined as the Rythem in which a song moves....in General.. In prticular...in any musical form it can be defined as the FREQUENCY OF SPEED BETWEEN THE ANGAS OF THE TALAM IN WHICH A SONG IS NOTATED. For example for Madhyama Kala Kritis the laya usually would be TaKaDiMi....i.e., the frequency being 4 Matras between each Anga of the Tala.
Carnatic Music students must give special atrtention to the LAYA aspect of the TALA while practicing, right from the Swaravali Varisaigal stage so that they get into the Groove correctly by the time they start singing the Geethams and Varnams etc.
The GURUs guidance plays a special role in shaping the students to sing or play an instrument in correct LAYA.
LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST.....ANY SONG SUNG OR PLAYED WITHOUT LAYA IS AS GOOD AS NOT SUNG OR PLAYED.
