This Great Madhawa Brahmin is believed to have lived between 1484 and 1564 and has written manycompositions in the form of KEERTHANAS, SULADIS & UGABHOGAS. It is believed that almost all his compositions are not notated and are just in lyrical form. So the Musicians have taken the liberty to notate / tune the lyrics in the raga which according to them suits best for the lyrics. In the process, HIS compositions got notated in different ragas. So one can find a same lyric notated / tuned in different ragas.
Nevertheless, HIS contribution to CARNATIC MUSIC by way of sream-lining the learning process of Carnatic Music STANDS STRONG even till date and all the Carnatic Music Teachers / Gurus follow the same scheme....but slightly modifying / upgrading them to suit their leniage.
The scheme comprises of SWARAVALI VARISAI, MADHYASTAYI VARISAI, DATTU VARISAI, HECHUSTAYI VARISAI, MANDRASTAYI VARISAI, JANTA SWARAS, ALANKARAS AND GEETHAS....COMPRISING OF PILLARI GEETHAS, LAKSHANA GEETHS etc.
All students learning Carnatic Music - vocal or instrumental get benefitted a lot by folloowing the above pattern of learning process.
As HIS scheme / pattern of learning Carnatic Music has become a tradition, HE is considered as CARNATAKA SANGEETHA PITAAMAHA.
