About the Course :
DC-DC converters are one of the promising players in the field of Power Electronics. Their applications lie from simple toys till satellites. Understanding these DC-DC converters require the rigorous application of Electric Networks, Control Systems and Mathematics.
Thus this course begins with the necessary basics of Circuit Theory and Mathematics. Generalized principles and behaviour of switching circuits, Inductor V-S Balance, Capacitor Charge Balance, Need for Small Ripple Approximations and its limitations, Steady State Behaviours and Design of Non-Isolated Converters, Effect of Non-Idealities on the behaviour of converters, Choice and selection of Semiconductor Devices, Origin of Discontinuous Modes, Boundary Behaviour of converters, Need for Isolation, Design of various Isolated Converters, Worst case Designs, Switch Utilisation and switch stress analysis, Design case studies using spreadsheets. Throughout the course, the design and analysis are carried using m-files and spreadsheets.
1. Be able to understand the role of mathematics in analysing switched networks
2. Design/Analyse/Compare Non Isolated and Isolated Converters for a given specification of supply voltage and load variations
3. Simulate various converters using MATLAB
4. Create design files using Excel spreadsheets
5. Face Technical Interviews with confidence
6. Prepare competitive exams like GATE.
