Our heartiest congratulations to Savitha! Here is an excerpt from the interview with Savitha J. Q1. When and how did you start as a Carnatic vocal tutor? I started off as a Carnatic vocal tutor in 2012 while assisting my mother and my first guru, Smt J Rajya Lakshmi, with her music classes. I have been teaching music ever since then. Q2. What skills are required to become a Carnatic vocal tutor? To become a good Carnatic vocal teacher, it is imperative to have an excellent sense of ‘sruti’ and ‘laya'. Also one should invest quality time in continuous and dedicated practice. One must try to learn as much possible guidance of a guru, master the art of being patient, and have the commitment and love for music. The teacher should be able to assess the students, understand their individual needs and provide personal attention based on their acumen. Q3. What do you think makes you stand out from other Carnatic vocal tutors on UrbanPro.com? As I hail from a family of music lovers and connoisseurs, I have been fortunate to have quite a lot of exposure to music, ever since my childhood. My mother, being a Vainika, would practice music for hours contributing to my extensive ear training. I inherited this form of art from my mother. No sooner had my musical journey began, Ithan got a very strong sense of ‘sruti’ and ‘laya’. I try my best to take this learning forward to the young generation, by way of teaching them all the minutest of nuances of Carnatic music. I ensure that my students have all the resources required to build a great sense of ‘sruti’ and ‘laya’, and also make sure that my classes are informative and enjoyable at the same time. Besides, I even take time to teach enough theory alongside vocal music so that the students can understand and appreciate the lessons in a better way. I also ensure that each student gets individual attention through personalised classes that suit their learning requirements. My classes are a blend of traditional music and modern learning methods, which ensure great outcomes for all my students. Q4. How did you come across UrbanPro.com? I randomly happened to come across Thinkvidya, which seemed to be an interesting concept. Upon researching and going through reviews about its services, I decided to enrol as a teacher. It was later that ThinkVidya was rebranded as UrbanPro. Q5. What was the turning point in your career? Giving up on my corporate career and taking up Carnatic music as a full-time profession has been the biggest turning point in my career. It gave me an opportunity to dedicate longer hours for practice, and a chance to teach more number of students with various requirements. Q6. How did UrbanPro.com help you expand your teaching classes? UrbanPro has helped me reach out to various people across the globe. It gave me a brilliant platform to showcase my skills. Before knowing about UrbanPro, I had a tough time advertising my classes. However, now that I keep my UrbanPro profile up to date and also get reviews from my existing students regularly, reaching out to more people has become quite easy. Q7.
