It varies from individual to individual. Generally, people prepare for one entire year preparation before their first prelims exam. Few people even prepared just (7-8) months. But one thing you need to keep in mind about the exam is (3 stages of exam and announcement of final result ) this process takes around (10-11 months). So approximately you have to spend 1.5-2 years for the whole process (preparation+exam)to complete. I hope this helps you.

One and half year with preserverance dedication with lot of hard and smart work and with proper guidance.. for prelims u should study from July 2018 to may 2019. Before prelims you have to complete your mains syllabus and your optional subject. Start writing test series for all these u need one and half year

1)Try finishing basic books and NCERTs once. If time doesn't permits at least finish uo reading NCERTs
2) Get into habit of reading newspaper from the present. It will give you a scope of linkage and retaining some of the facts
3)You can prepare notes of NCERTs which will come handy when you start you actual preparations.
4) Go through syllabus of upsc thoroughly, previous year paper of at least 5 years to know the pattern and decide what to study or not.
5) Basic books which you cab study is laxmikant for polity, Sriram Ias for economics, Shankar for environment etc.

read lessthere is no fixed time limit for that,generally who have to write UPSC start early ,just after entering graduation and thoroughly start preparing and understand their weaknesses and eliminate them,those who say that they cleared UPSC in their first attempt are actually hiding the fact that they have been following UPSC all this time while doing graduation.
