Etymology. The term Bharatanatyam is a compound of two words, Bharata and Natyam. The term Bharata in Bharatanaytam, in the Hindu tradition, is believed to have named after the famous performance art sage to whom the ancient Natya Shastra is attributed. In its history, Bharatanatyam has also been called Sadir.
Bharatanatyam is a classical dance style that originated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. It is said to be the cosmic dance of the Lord Shiva, a Hindu God.
The Alarippu meaning flowering bud) is traditionally the first dance piece that Bharatanatyam dancers learn and perform in this type of classical dance recital. It is an invocation piece, symbolizing the offering of respects to both God and the audience.
