There is a easy way to find the square of a 2 digit number.
Step 1: Square both digits. Eg. if the number is 78, squaring both digits will yield 4964
Step 2.: Multiply each of the digits .7x8= 56
Step 3: Multiply the number from Step 2 above by 20 i.e 56x20= 1120
Step 4: Add the number in Step 1 with the number in step 3: i.e 4964 + 1120 = 6084 which is the square of 78.
One can use this method to find squares of 2 digit numbers mentally - without using pen and paper.
Note when 1,2 or 3 is the unit digit, their squares will have only one digit i.e 1,4 or 9 respectively. They need to be represented in 2 digits like 01, 04 or 09.
Hence squate of 81 would be 6401 + 160 = 6561.
