When the material in question changes to a new state — liquid, solid, or gas — some heat goes into or comes out of the process without changing the temperature. You can even have solids that turn directly into gas. As dry ice gets warmer, it turns into carbon dioxide gas. This process is called sublimation. Imagine you’re calmly drinking your lemonade at an outdoor garden party. You grab some ice to cool your lemonade, and the mixture in your glass is now half ice, half lemonade (which you can assume has the same specific heat as water), with a temperature of exactly 0 degrees Celsius. read less

When ice melts, it absorbs as much energy as it would take to heat an equivalent mass of water by 80 °C. During the melting process, the temperature remains constant at 0 °C. While melting, any energy added breaks the hydrogen bonds between ice (water) molecules.

When heat energy is supplied to ice, it changes into water and then to vapour. If we cool the steam, it gets converted into water and further cooling of water changes into ice. When heat energy is supplied to ice, it changes into water and then to vapour. If we cool the steam, it gets converted into water and further cooling of water changes into ice. Here the heat energy is used up in changing the state of matter. The heat is used to increase the kinetic energy of the particles of ice to such an extent that they break away from the rigid lattice structure of the solid form, ice, and move around freely to form the liquid form, water. So, until all the ice has melted, the heat absorbed does not raise the temperature of the ice-water mixture. In the same way, the temperature does not change while a liquid is boiling. This heat, which does not raise the temperature of the body, is called Latent Heat

Latent heat is the heat which is required for changing phase of a substance. And change of phase is an isothermal process. While melting of ice, any energy added breaks the cage structure of ice formed by the hydrogen bonds.

The heat is used up for the change of state called Latent heat.

Because Temperature Remains Constant during a Phase change.

When we try to melt ice, our heating energy absorbed only for phase change from ice to water. It can not apple energy to increase the temperature.thus this phenomenon is nothing but the latent heat.

When the temperature are increase, ice change its state. It converts solid state to liquid state. All amount of temperature are use to apply convert one state to another state. So its doesn't heat.

As you hold the glass and watch the action, the ice begins to melt — but the contents of the glass don’t change temperature. Why? The heat (thermal energy) going into the glass from the outside air is melting the ice, not warming the mixture up. So does this make the equation for heat energy. read less
