Hydrogen forms molecular or covalent hydride (binary compound) when it reacts with p-block elements under certain conditions. For eg: H2O,H2S,NH3,CH4,B2H6,etc.

On the basis of no. of electrons in Lewis structure, these covalent hydrides are further classified into:

* Electron-deficient hydride :

# less than 8 number of electrons in Lewis structure. For eg: hydride of boron: BH3 ( 6 electrons ). Hydride of Boron actually exist as dimer in order to get stable.

#Group 13 elements form this kind of hydride.

* Electron precise hydride:

#Their octet is exactly fulfilled by 8 electrons. For eg: CH4

# Group 14 elements form these hydrides.

* Electron rich hydride :

# Their octet is filled by 8 electrons and some lone pairs can be seen in Lewis structure of these hydrides. For eg: H2O, NH3, HF,etc.

#Group 15,16,17 elements form these hydrides.

Explain why HC1 is a gas and HF is a liquid.
Fluorine is most electronegative due to this HF is more polar than HCl. Therefore HF is associated with intermolecular H Bonding and liquid at room temperature.
