VD Savarkar called 1857 revolt as 1st War of Indian Independence.
Reasons for 1857 Revolt:
1. Cartridges given to British Indian army were greased with cow and pig fat, which hurt Indian's religious feeling.
2. Superior posts and high salaries were only fixed for Europeans.
3. Sati system was abolished, and the Widow Remarriage Act was passed, which enraged them.
Result: Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier, shot a British officer at Barackpur near Meerut on Mar 23rd 1857.
Bahadur Shah Jaffar 2 was the Delhi sultan during this revolt.
Consequences: Victoria Proclamation was passed on Nov 1st,1858. Accordingly, Governor-General post was changed to Viceroy of India.
