Spanish is part of the Romance language family, which also includes Portuguese, Italian, French, Romanian, Catalan and a whole lot of minority languages you probably haven't heard of. We say they are a family because they can all be traced to a common ancestor, a colloquial form of Latin. Having a common ancestor means that they are all basically similar, especially in their grammar (which tends to change more slowly) and way of expression but also similar vocabulary.
