IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The word communication has been derived from the Latin terms "communes" and "communicare" which means to share i.e. sharing of information, ideas and feelings. Communication involves listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Communication is a dynamic process. Communication is the foundation of the interconnected world. A comprehensive communication package includes the signs, symbols and sounds. Human behavior and social relationships are the result of process of communication. Effective communication skills facilitate successful human relationships. Language is means of communication. One can communicate through gestures, facial expressions, drawing and pictures. Communication through language is man's distinctive ability. Language is a symbolic communication system.

Any language including English has 3 systems and three functions.
Systems:   System of sounds called ‘phonology'.

                  System of word order called ‘syntax'.

                  System of meaning called ‘semantics'.

There are different methods of communication. They are:

1)   Downward communication

2)   Upward communication

3)   Horizontal Communication

4)   Diagonal communication

These communication channels are specially used in management and other professional fields. Communication from higher level to lower level is downward communication. The upward channel constitutes from lower level to higher level.

The communication between equals is horizontal communication while the diagonal communication prevails all around.

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN ENGLISH

English is the most powerful medium of communication in the world. English today is a world language spoken and written by vast majority of people around the world as it is hetero language. The genesis of English language in India can be traced in 16th century when East India Company entered the Indian shores. The study on English language in India was officially imposed by Macaulay in 1835.

The eighth schedule of the Indian constitution recognizes 22 languages. English is regarded as a prestige language in India by the official language Amendment Act of 1967.

English is an International language which has the widest range of currency in the world. English was made the language of office administration. In the present day as the result of globalization knowledge is being spread far & wide soon.

Intelligent man can attain success in life through various means. So the need for a global language has become more. Learning English has become the basic requirement for communication. Communication through English language is a mark of civilization.
